Brace yourselves, folks. Speak has grabbed the indie world by the throat and isn’t letting go. Homegrown in Austin, Texas, Speak is a four-man set consisting of singer Troupe Gammage, bassist Joey Delahoussaye, guitarist Nick Hurt, and drummer Jake Stewart. With a synthy-chipwave 80s vibe, the group aces everything from falsetto choruses to space-age keyboard lines.
Speak has been making waves since 2010 when they won the Austin Music Award for Best New Band and 2011’s Best Indie Group. Playing the Austin City Limits Festival in 2010 garnered support for their debut album I Believe in Everything (2011), which gave us the crazy popular single, “Carrie.” 2014 has already been a big year for the band, following the success of their second single, “Peaks” (2013). The preview sound for their sophomore album Pedals seems to have taken a note from their previous touring partners Tegan & Sara and collaborator, RAC—a synthy dreamscape, strong central beat and Troupe’s soaring vocals in the front seat.
They’ve since received praise from the A.V. Club, the Austin Chronicle and a little someone named Ellie Goulding. They’re ones to watch—and sure as hell, a treat to listen to. Pre-order Pedals (release date June 24th) and check out their tour schedule for this summer. Bonus! Check out their rad video game for “Be Reasonable, Diane.”
