Aviary Review Literary Journal
Aviary Review is a literary journal founded with the premise that the artist’s story is just as radical as their work. With my co-editor Lindsay Oncken, we sought out new voices, encouraging submissions from previously unpublished writers, photographers, and artists. As recent graduates of The University of Texas English program and frequent submitters to local journals, we wanted to give back to a community that had given so heartily to us in our first few years writing.
From early conception to our first printing, Lindsay and I designed branding, met with printers, tried our hand at financial planning/budgeting, fundraised in our community, built a website (now defunct), filmed and edited our Kickstarter video, managed a submission cycle, facilitated all communications with our pending artists, and produced our first issue. Our launch party/reading took place at Spider House Ballroom and featured local slam poetry group SpitShine.
Aviary's Kickstarter was launched in February of 2014. Due to funding, the journal survived one issue (digital; not printed) and together we continued managing the blog through the rest of the year. In 2015, we made the decision to allow the journal to exist as a standalone issue.
